Case Study 1 - The Art of Restoration
Tony Humphrey stands in a courtyard off London Road, Bicester,
Oxfordshire and says, "The true art of restoration is making
the building
appear to have been cared for all its life."
Behind
him is 17th Century Grade 2 listed property that is being
restored by his company,
AS Humphrey. To his right is an original 300 year old stone
wall, to his left a seemingly identical
wall that was built just three weeks ago. To the untrained
eye they were constructed at the
same time, to an experienced eye, this is an excellent piece
of restoration.
For 25
years Tony Humphrey has been returning listed buildings to
their original glory, employing experts in traditional crafts
such as stone masons, thatchers, cornice and plaster moulders,
in addition to the standard traders of bricklayers, master
carpenters, plumbers, plasterers and electricians. These craftsmen
work with traditional materials to recreate the effect that
is required by the client and professionals such as architects,
surveyors, English Heritage officials, structural engineers
and building inspectors.
Where
new sash windows are required they are fabricated from scratch
by AS Humphreys specialist joiners; timbers are replaced with
precisely the right type of wood that, within months, will
be indiscernible from the original and if the original walls
were made of traditional horsehair plaster and laths, that
is what will be used.
The entire
process, from tendering to completion, is overseen personally
by Tony Humphrey, and is based on four basic principles of
Quality, Craftsmanship, Cost Control and Client Service.
It is
a culture that has earned this family run building contractor
a quarter of a century of repeat business and recurring invitations
to tender.
From residential
and commercial to institutional and recreational contracts,
AS Humphrey has an extensive portfolio of successfully completed
restorations.
